JEROME DOWNES' LANDMARK FORUM MIND MAP - 29 MAR 2005

THE LANDMARK FORUM PRESENTATION by JEROME

I would not have the opportunity to attend this wonderful presentation if not for the kind invitation of my good friend, Robert Koh. It was really an unforgetable evening.

Briefly, the seminar is about some very essential lessons in life and the principles to which everyone should abide by. It was facilitated by Jerome, who very ably presented these facts in an excellent sequence. This really helped me capture a good portion of the lessons learnt. I am glad I could share this mind map with everyone.

I think it is quite readable. Please enjoy and have fun analysing the mind map.

Afternote:
After posting the above mind map, I wanted to find out more about the very able speaker, coach and excellent presenter of that Landmark Forum seminar that was held at the then Spring Singapore auditorium on 29 March 2005. So....., I googled for him. Sadly, I found that Jerome Downes passed away on 25 Dec 2009.

Reading from my mind map, I could "clearly" hear him, announcing to the audience that after more than 32 years as a Senior Leader in Landmark Forum, he would be a father in about 3 months time. From his voice, I could feel that he was enormously proud of his yet-to-be born child and that he loved his family very, very much.

From hindsight, one could see that I managed to recall what went on at that seminar.....even after more than nine years.

Try to find the key words that transported me back to the auditorium, where I sat together with my good friends, Chiang Gnee and Robert, listening intensively to the wise words of this fine gentleman.

This mind map is really dedicated to the late Jerome Downes and his family.

"CASTLES CAN FLY" - MIND MAP OF ALVIN LEE's (aka, the SANDMAN) 28th COURSE ON "BEYOND the BOX....MORE THAN JUST THINKING"

MIND MAP OF ALVIN LEE's "BEYOND the BOX - MORE THAN JUST THINKING"

It was really a joy to attend Alvin Lee's course. There was not a moment of boredom as you listen to this passionate, self-motivated "Sandman", as he is also known, as he relates his own journey of Innovation and Creativity....in this "Beyond the Box --- More Than Just Thinking" course.

One would feel highly motivated just by listening, as he illustrates the basic elements of being an INVENTOR by bringing in his experience of overcoming difficulties to successfully launch his "Castles Can Fly" project.

Please enjoy and have fun reading through the mind map.

ANGER MANAGEMENT MIND MAP Seminar Notes on 29 July 2008

ANGER MANAGEMENT SEMINAR By Dr Wolff Von Auer & Ms Diana Oh
I was glad that I attended an excellent "Anger Management" seminar conducted by Dr Wolff Von Auer and Ms Diana Oh on 29 July 2008 and was in for a surprise that many in the seminar including myself, did not know the proper way of breathing in order to maximise oxygen intake to the brain. Do you?

Briefly, one can learn from this seminar is that ANGER is a BEHAVIOUR that one can LEARN........and hence MANAGE. The STAGES of Anger starts with SURPRISE, followed by FEAR and this turns into ANGER (due to the emotions that develops within). So, how do we COPE and have a PLAN for a SOLUTION to manage this anger of ours? It is not easy......but, Dr Auer did a fine job.

Please read on, enjoy and have fun analysing the mind map!

PS:
Normally, from my experience, when you do see a well-balanced "live" mind map, there is a very high probability that those presenters are wonderful professionals who have excellent presentation skills. They would also have taken lots of efforts to plan and think through how to effectively put their materials across to their participants.

MIND MAP on PROF TN GOH's 8σ (8 Sigma) KEYNOTE SPEECH at SQI SYMPOSIUM 2001

I have always enjoyed listening to Prof Goh Tong Ngee's lectures / speeches, ever since I took his "Advanced Engineering Statistics" module in the 1981 Master in ISE course, NUS. He make this serious module, fun and lively to the extend that you will enjoy analysing / looking at data ( → information) in a simple way and yet, retain the rigors and robustness of a statistical analysis.

In my opinion, this module is definitely indispensible not only for engineers and scientists, but for doctors, managers and other professionals. Quoting from Bill Gates .........
BUSINESS@SPEEDofTHOUGHT - "How you gather, manage and use information will determine whether you win or lose". This probably sums up the importance of INFORMATION in this 21st Century.

TN Goh, as he is better known, explained the 8 features (with reference to my mind map) in his 8σ Keynote Speech
as: SATISFACTION, STRUCTURED, STATISTICAL, STANDARDISED, SOFTWARE, SUSTAINED, SYSTEM AND SCENARIO.

Please enjoy and have fun analysing the mind map!

MIND MAP of an EXCELLENT INDUCTION PROGRAMME

AIMS, GOALS & OBJECTIVES (A.G.O.) and INDUCTION PROGRAMME

After attending an excellent presentation in the morning (as shown in the mind map above), I was involved in a very exciting "Learning Xcursion" at the Marina Bay in the afternoon, The waterfront trail around the bay is full of exciting things that an Engineer can learn.

The very fact that the bay was constructed showed what engineers are capable of doing. The skills that engineers possess in building the Marina Bay is definitely something that any engineer would be proud of.

Thus, it is good to really look......see.....think....explore..... some of things that are constructed when you stroll along the promenade encircling Marina Bay.

Instead of calling it a Waterfront Trail, one could call it an Engineering Discovery Trail....because of the numerous engineering works that goes to make Marina Bay a class of its own.

As I have been conducting "Learning Journeys" for my first year Engineering Materials module students, I thought, it may also be interesting to have a worksheet to engage and familiarise them with elements of what they would be studying in an Engineering Diploma course. This worksheet was designed along the lines that I helped me win the Academic Development Award in 2008. Needless to say, the "mind map" and "whole-brain learning" mindsets / philosophy also featured deeply in the development of the worksheet.

FUN in learning has always been my philosophy in developing any learning materials for students, especially, BORING subjects that could put most students to sleep.

Below is an example of a FUN learning worksheet.

Enjoy and have fun.

MIND MAP of SCOTT McNEALY's KEYNOTE SPEECH in "TECHNOLOGY in the AGE of PARTICIPATION" ON Wed, 14 SEP 2005

KEYNOTE SPEECH BY SCOTT McNEALY, CHAIRMAN & CEO of SUN MICROSYSTEMS USA IN SUNTEC CITY, SINGAPORE ON WED., 14 SEP 2005

I was definitely glad to attend this keynote speech by Scott McNealy, Chairman & CEO of SUN Microsystems in Suntec City Singapore on 14 September 2005.

His presentation further reinforced the growing strengths of the Internet, JAVA as the driver and the opening of the INFO AGE where everyone is allowed to PARTICIPATE - e.g. BUSINESS, SKYPE, INTERNET, GOOGLE.....etc.

At the end of his keynote, panel members discussed many issues pertaining to Participation, Skills required and of course the skills necessary for Singapore to be relevant in the INFO-COMMUNICATION AGE.

From HINDSIGHT, lots of stuff that were discussed by the panel came to be realised today. Looks like it is good for one to attend KEYNOTE speeches such as this one, in order to have a bit of the FORESIGHT into the future.

PRESENTATION at THE GLOBAL MIND MAP CONFERENCE 2007 on 14-15 Nov 2007

PRESENTATION SLIDES

MIND MAP OF PRESENTATION

It was indeed a wonderful experience to be invited to speak to an international audience on my favourite topic of "Real-time Buzan Mind Mapping - Challenges, Difficulties and Benefits" during the Global Mind Map Conference 2007, organised jointly by Buzan Asia and the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), 14-15 Nov 2007.

Naturally, given the hectic pace of working full-time in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I resorted to my valuable Mind Manager 2002 software to quickly create an overview of my presentation.

Organising my notes, teaching, lesson & curriculum plans, seminar presentations ...etc ...etc using mind maps has perhaps helped me gain a "Good New Habit" (GNH) which has grown larger than ever before and is still growing. It is an indispensible tool for me. I hope it would be for you too!

Attached below is the complete schedule of the Global Mind Map Conference 2007.

"ACTIVE vs PASSIVE LISTENING" MIND MAP

HOW TO BE AN ACTIVE RATHER THAN A PASSIVE LISTENER - ST 13 Mar 2014
It was really a coincident that the article of what one should
do to become a more ACTIVE Listener OVER that of a PASSIVE Listener  appeared in The Straits Times on the same day as I was going to do a revision for my students on the above subject.

Of course, I was thrilled and set upon myself to make a mind map summary of the article on an A6-sized paper in about an hour. Using a visualiser, I was able to present a summary of the subject to my students. I hope they manage to see and learn how to make a mind map summary of an article. Enjoy.

EDITED MINUTES OF DIVISIONAL MEETING MIND MAP

"EDITED MINUTES OF MEETING" MIND MAP ON 12 MAR 2014
One can edit the minutes of a meeting by omitting certain key words from the branches and yet preserve the entire essense of the minutes. This edited minutes of meeting can then be circulated to relevant parties without having to re-write the minutes. Interesting, isn't?

I really enjoyed doing the minutes in a mind map, as it could be circulated almost immediately after the meeting is over.

Think about the benefits one can get by circulating the minutes almost as soon as the meeting is over! Those who are at the meeting will have a better chance of recalling, remembering what is being said and acting on the task(s) that they have been assigned to do so.

HSBC - BEYOND MONEY MIND MAP at the "Garden at the Bay", Flower Field Hall on 4th Mar 2014

MIND MAP OF HSBC - BEYOND MONEY EVENT at the Garden at the Bay, Flower Field Hall, Singapore, on Tuesday, 4th March 2014, 6-9pm

I spent a wonderful evening at the "Garden at the Bay" listening to 3 groups of panelists  (Photos below) at an event organised by HSBC. The style of conducting the event as a panel discussion without any papers presented by the experts, is quite unique and interesting, as one probably gets the gists of the main ideas and thoughts directly from the panelists. To myself (I hope, other participants as well), one thing is very clear, the success of the evening's discussion lies very much in the very capable hands of the HSBC facilitator, Ms Diana Ser. She was able to draw out much from the expert panel members and steer the discussion very nicely and within the time constraint, towards an enjoyable evening. It was really great.

Of course, I could not resist doing a simple Mind Map of the three panel discussions to remember and share some NEW perspectives and valuable insights that I have learnt with those who did not have the opportunity to attend as well as those present. I believe, it is very difficult to recall more than 10%, especially if no notes are taken or revision is done.....unless you are a genius.

By taking down notes using the mind map, one could easily recall as much as 60-70%?? I let you be the judge. Now...just pause for a while.....and..... imagine the intellectual capital of a company or organisation skyrocketing through the roof if everyone/majority in the company/organisation mind maps and LEARN! How smart would the company/organisation be? I have always imagine and believe that Google has lots of people who loves to have holistic views of everything and loves to LEARN, RELEARN AND UNLEARN from their mistakes as well as their successes. As a keen user of GOOGLE products since 1999, I have watched GOOGLE improving by leaps and bounds....... haha .......... hope ..... I am not wrong in my observations!

A brief summary of the event is attached below:
1)  One word seems to resonate for all the three panels. "TIME" !! On hindsight, the "Children" panelists says that they should have spent MORE TIME when their children were young and growing up. The "Retirees" panelists says they have MORE TIME as well as MORE OPPORTUNITIES and the "Women" panelists advocated for MORE QUALITY TIME during working hours so as to be with their children.

2)  There is an interesting branch in the "Retirees" panel discussion. Dr Kanwaljit Soin related how she asked our former prime minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew regarding the question of "What is the meaning of retirement?" The answer Mr Lee gave, according to Dr Soin, was that he would only retire upon his "Death"! Hope you manage to get the same interpretation from the key words (e.g. "LKY" and "DEATH" ) used in the mind map!......haha.

3)  I would like to gently invite viewers to read the mind map above and to try understand what went on during the nearly 2hour event. It is simple.....and interesting to interpret the views of the panelists. Enjoy!

"Nurturing Your Children" Panel Members: HSBC Facilitator - Ms Diana Ser, Dr Daniel Fung, Dr Bervyn Lee, Joanna Koh-Hoe, Lydia Ko, Tina Hyon

"Reevaluating Retirement" Panel Members: HSBC Facilitator - Ms Diana Ser, Dr Kanwaljit Soin, Leong Yue Kheong, Thomas Lim, Dick Yip

"Women's Role Today" Panel Members: HSBC Facilitator - Ms Diana Ser, Dr Annie Koh, Irene Boey, Rachel Eng, Wong Meng Meng

SEATTLE's PIKE PLACE FISH MARKET PHILOSOPHY MIND MAP by DR STEPHEN C LUNDIN, HARRY PAUL & JOHN CHRISTENSEN

"THE FISH PHILOSOPHY" MIND MAP on a A5-sized Paper
Looking through my archives, I came across a mind map I drew of an amazing book, "The Fish Philosophy" by Dr Stephen C Lundin, Harry Paul and John Christensen, on Sunday, 14 July 2002

Although my wife bought the FISH book during her trip to India in April 2001, I did not really read it about it until I came across the "Pike Place Fish Market" story that the book was based on.

On hindsight, I could hardly hide my joy at creating a A5-sized summary mind map of "The Fish Philosophy".

When I showed it to my eleven year old daughter, she quickly drew another creative picture of the central image of my mind map and wrote "Mine's nicer"......which I totally agree! Here is her creation! Well done!

My Eleven Year Old Daughter's Central Image of "The Fish Philosophy"

 Please enjoy.

My MIND MAP on PROF. DOUGLAS MONTGOMERY's Lecture on "INNOVATION, QUALITY TECHNOLOGY & STATISTICS" at ISE Dept, Faculty of Engrg, NUS on Friday, 21 Feb 2014

MIND MAP SUMMARY of LECTURE BY PROF. DOUGLAS MONTGOMERY on 21 Feb 2014
NETWORKING EVENT Organised by ISE Department, Faculty of Engineering, National University of Singapore
I was glad to attend the excellent presentation by Professor Douglas Montgomery on "Innovation, Quality Technology & Statistics".
It was an evening where the Professor shared his thoughts that Industrial Engineers (IE) should be renamed/called as Innovation Engineers instead. Lots of questions/ anecdotes were shared......among them were:

1) Prof. Douglas Montgomery's "Ask my driver" anecdote. He also mentioned that executives and managers nowadays, are not EXCITED about quality but are more EXCITED about new products instead.
2) The difference between an Engineer and a Doctor..... wrt the goals of "Landing a man on the Moon" and "Finding a cure for cancer" by Prof. LC Tang
3) Sharing of how to deploy 6sigma methodology in education?
4) Comparing ISO companies to those who really cared about Quality .....--> being ISO does not mean or lead to Quality products.....it just means following a set of procedures! to........
5) Using DOX in determining teacher effectiveness.....!
6) Executives not quite interested in QUALITY. They get extremely EXCITED only in NEW PRODUCTS.
7) Quote: "All experiments are DESIGNED EXPERIMENTS"
8) Difference between an Aerodynamics expert (Theorist: Dr Samuel P Langley) versus two Bicycle Mechanics (Experimenters: Wilber and Orville Wright) is the former built 2 planes that failed to take off, while the later built planes that eventually flew!
9) Research is to create SURPRISES and take RISKS... while, Development must not have SURPRISES and ZERO RISKS! Hahaha.

It was an enjoyable evening and am looking forward for the next talk.

Thank you for viewing.

My ACTA MIND MAPS of Various COMPETENCY UNITS (CU) and COMPETENCY ELEMENTS (CE)

COMPETENCY UNIT 3A - CE1: DEFINE PARAMETERS OF THE TRAINING PROGRAMME

COMPETENCY UNIT 3A - CE2: DESIGN THE TRAINING PROGRAMME

COMPETENCY UNIT 3A - CE3: DEVELOP THE TRAINING PROGRAMME
COMPETENCY UNIT 3A - CE4: EVALUATE THE TRAINING PROGRAMME

COMPETENCY UNIT 5 - FORMAT for an ASSESSMENT PLAN
Several relevant mind maps of Competency Elements (CE), Competency Units (CU) as well as others are posted here. These were drawn during the period that I was enrolled in the  "Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA)" course. These mind maps should preferably be used as an aid together with the full set of WSQ ACTA documents that is normally provided to each course participant.

My goal is just to share with like-minded visual learners of the mind mapped knowledge/notes that I drew by hand or created on the very useful Mindmanager software. Hope it helps. Enjoy.

Thank you for viewing.

AFTERNOTE:
Just to share with viewers that I successfully completed my WSQ course in "Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (Facilitated Learning)". Thank you Oei Min. It was a wonderful experience going through the ACTA course. I shall treasure it. A skill-based qualification is definitely important in our Polytechnic & ITE educational system. In my opinion, more emphasis and focus should be given in this area as it will definitely make people proud of their acquired skills.

My MIND MAP of NOTES of a MEETING Recorded in REAL-TIME

NOTES OF MEETING THAT WAS RECORDED IN REAL-TIME on an A5-sized Paper

This is an example of how we could re-decorate a mind map that we recorded using a single colour pen and make it appealing to the eye and ..... of course, the brain.

I did not bring my usual set of colour pens to the meeting and hence still decided to take down notes in my normal mind map format using my only blue ball-point pen.

Subsequently, I just used my favourite Staedtler(TM) brand colour markers to underline the branches with different colour at my own time, after the meeting. I was quite pleased with the clarity and compactness that the mind map has summarised the notes of the meeting for me.

Noticed that it is not possible to mind map the notes to this level of compactness and speed using any computerised mind map software, like mindmanager, iMindmap and others available today. Can you think of any reasons why this is so? Haha.

I have always emphasized that the best way of developing one's mastery in mind mapping notes of meeting in real-time is to do it by hand and in-situ. Hope you understand the reasons for my recommendation.

Thank you for viewing and enjoy.

My MIND MAP of ROBERT GAGNE's INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN THEORY for LEARNING

ROBERT GAGNE's NINE INSTRUCTIONAL EVENTS FOR LEARNING TO HAPPEN
I first came across Robert Gagne's nine events of instructions for learning soon after attending the WSQ's "Advanced Certificate for Testing and Assessment" (ACTA) course. The ACTA course was conducted by Ms Oei Min, a very experienced WSQ instructor and facilitator of learning.

I find Gagne's nine instructional events theory an interesting supplement/guide in teaching my students. After many years of teaching students to learn and how to learn, I have learnt that by adding the element of FUN as much as possible to every one of the nine steps, one can enhance learning and retention. Please enjoy the mind map.

My MIND MAP of Prof. MOSHE F. RUBINSTEIN's Lecture on "MINDING ORGn - BRINGING the FUTURE to the PRESENT"

Prof Moshe F. Rubinstein on "MINDING ORGANISATION - BRINGING the FUTURE to the PRESENT"
This real-time mind map of the above mentioned seminar organised by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) Academy on 9 Jan 2001 never fails to amaze me on how I managed to capture the essence of Prof Moshe F. Rubinstein's talk.

I could still remember January 2001 as the month where I did a record number of beautiful mind maps. The above lecture by Professor Moshe F. Rubinstein was indeed memorable in that it taught me always to try to picture the future and bring it to the present. By doing so, your project would always most likely succeed.

Prof Rubinstein gave lots on examples on this concept......like how Imhostep, the great Egyptian pyramid builder took 20 long years to build the pyramid. Imhostep definitely was able to "see" the future (i.e. plan into the future) and bring the plans back to the present. Like he was able to cater for all the barriers and obstacles that may hinder the success of his project.

One of the questions that I always asked my students and participants is, how did the Egyptians managed to place the last stone (weighing one ton), on top of the 460 feet high pyramid, 4000 years ago? What equipment did they use at that time? How did they manage to build an almost perfect pyramid? What type of measuring instruments were used during the building stage?.....etc...

It was really a challenge for me to mind map the talk on just one sheet of A3-sized paper, considering the fact that there was no table for me to place my mind map on. All I had was, a flat plastic document container that I had to place on my leg/thighs to form a temporary table. I had to switched my legs several times during the 2-hour seminar so as to keep the blood flowing, if you know what I mean. On top of that I had to hold a bunch of colour pens that I had to switch quickly to reflect the tone of the speech and etc....Haha.

Of course, the reward for me was admiring the fact that I managed to capture much of Prof. Rubinstein's brilliant lecture on "Minding Organisation - Bringing the Future to the Present" all packed onto just one sheet of A3-sized paper. Professor Rubinstein and Dr Tan Chin Nam, the then PS of MOM graciously autographed the mind map on the spot.

Not many people in the world have the ability to really think about the future and bring it back to the present. Among those who can, I think, were Imhotep, the great Egyptian pyramid builder, Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor who unified China and many others. Have you encountered anyone like them in modern times? Haha.

I have my own list and I am sure you have a similar list too. Do enjoy the mind map and continue formulating your list. More importantly, do what Professor Rubinstein advocates, that is, to bring the Future back to the Present. This really calls for imagination on a cosmic scale. Thank you for viewing.
